Leather notes are among the oldest in the history of perfumery: so, in France, already in the XVI century, members of the guild Gantiers et Parfumeurs, engaged in the manufacture of leather gloves for aristocrats, tried to mask the unpleasant stench of tanned leather. The craftsmen tried to invent special aromatic substances with a pleasant smell, which were supposed to hide the ignoble stench of tanned leather. Actually, this tradition marked the beginning of the perfumer's profession.
