Description

Plant name according to the botanical classifier: Evernia Prunastri Parts of the plant going into processing: moss Types of raw materials obtained: essential oil, absolute, resinoid, concretes Methods of production: distillation, extraction Olfactory group: woody Position of oak moss notes in the olfactory pyramid: middle and base notes Additional information: oak moss is one of the most popular perfume ingredients of the past. Chypre fragrances, which appeared in stamp collections at the beginning of the twentieth century, are inextricably linked with it. The raw materials obtained from oak moss for the needs of perfumery are diverse, but most often rubber and absolute are used. The olfactory characteristics of oak moss notes include woody, earthy, mushroom, balsamic, coumarin and green aspects. According to the requirements of the European organization IFRA, the use of oak moss in perfume concentrates is strictly limited, and this is associated with the formal "death" of the chypre genre, officially launched with the release of the eponymous fragrance Chypre from Coty in 1917.  Perfumers-chemists offer a variety of synthetic and semi-synthetic bases, as well as simpler compounds that imitate or approximate in their olfactory properties to the aroma of oak moss, but none of them imitates the smell of natural raw materials one hundred percent. One of these compounds is evernil, a popular and widely used component with a clean, moist woody odor.
