Description

White sandalwood (Santalum album), family Santalaceae Parts of the plant that are being processed: wood aged from 30 years old Types of raw materials obtained: essential oil Production methods: steam distillation Olfactory group: woody Position of sandalwood notes in the olfactory pyramid: middle and base notes Until recently, white sandalwood was extremely popular and in demand in the perfume industry, but in 2004, this evergreen tropical plant was listed in the Red Book and the export of its wood and essential oil from India (the main supplier of raw materials from wild white sandalwood) It was banned. Despite this, the essential oil of white sandalwood is considered a reference in perfumery and has a sweet woody, creamy aroma with smoky, floral and slightly urinal aspects. The final characteristics of the raw materials depend on time-geographical and technological factors. If the perfume formula or the terms of reference suggest natural raw materials, then the perfumer can use West Australian (Santalum spicatum) and/or African (Osyris tenuifolia Engl.) sandalwood oil. The former has aromatic characteristics similar to white sandalwood, but its animal and floral shades are less pronounced. However, in most cases, perfumers imitate the note of sandalwood with the help of synthetic components common in modern perfumery. For example, Ebanol Givaudan has a deep woody aroma with creamy and tobacco shades (one of the main components of the Méchant Loup L'Artisan Parfumeur). Sandalore Givaudan (Eau de Nonchalance Mercurio Perfumes) is characterized by transparent woodiness with a soft aquatic and floral shade, while Javanol has a fresh woody aroma with hints of rose, grapefruit and a traditional creamy aspect (Bergamask Orto Parisi, Escentric 04 Escentric Molecules, Molecule 04 Escentric Molecules, Wonderwood Comme des Garçons). In addition to these, there are many sandalwood synthetic odorants, with which, with varying degrees of reliability, you can simulate the sound of natural essential oil of sandalwood. A large range of perfumes with notes of sandalwood of varying degrees of naturalness can also be found in the collections of Arab perfume brands.
